Organization Mission


Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for all people with Down syndrome by empowering individuals, families, and professionals with information and support through education, social programs, and community partnerships.


Associate Board Mission


The Down Syndrome Association of Greater Charlotte Associate Board is a group of emerging leaders who dedicate their own time, talents, networks, and resources to support the work and mission of the organization. The Associate Board will be comprised of up to 15 members and be responsible for Engaging Donors & Fundraising, Planning Events, Raising Awareness, Skills-based Volunteering, and General Volunteering.


Roles & Responsibilities


The role of an Associate Board member carries with it the responsibility to serve as a committed supporter and thoughtful advocate for the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Charlotte. The specific responsibilities that members will take on are shown below.

Co-Chairs (Term: 2 years)

Role: Leaders of the associate board

Responsibilities: Serve as the main point of contact between the organization and the Associate Board. Schedule, set agendas, and lead meetings in supporting the organization aligning with the Board of Directors and staff designated initiative(s). Responsible for tracking and holding other members accountable for participation and fundraising goals. Ensure overall success of the board.


Secretary (Term: 2 years)

Role: In charge of managing board records and assist with the management of internal and external communications

Responsibilities: Update, manage, and distribute board documents and records. Take notes at meetings. Assist in the management of internal and external communications (including email, social media, general outreach). Attend an annual check-in with Co-Chairs.


General Member (Term: 2 years)

Role: Member of General Member Taskforce; flexible role

Responsibilities: Attend meetings and assist with any projects led by the officers. These projects can be in any area of focus (fundraising, events, communications, outreach, etc.). Meet with officers annually for check-in and to re-evaluate membership when the term ends.

Goals & Expectations


Time Commitment

The Board will meet in person 6 times a year, and members will be required to attend 4 of 6 meetings each year to fulfill their attendance requirement. If a member cannot attend in person, they will be allowed to dial in via conference call. In addition, members agree to dedicate time outside of meetings to the completion of specific projects or tasks assigned to them. Board members are expected to volunteer 25 hours with organization programs and events annually.


Term Details

Commitment starts on the first of January, applicants falling later in the year can start earlier than June but will fall into the June term start and their commitment will run June-June of the following year.
