Special Olympics: #SpotlightOnCLT Autism Awareness


Today's highlight for #SpotlightOnCLT Autism Awareness is all about Special Olympics North Carolina.  Special Olympics North Carolina offers year-round sports training and competition for nearly 40,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities. These athletes inspire greatness through their success and provide motivation to the thousands of coaches, sports officials, local program committee members, and event organizers involved in Special Olympics statewide. SONC offers Olympic-type competitions in 19 sports on local and state levels.

ZABS Place: #SpotlightOnCLT Autism Awareness

ZABS Place employs young adults with special needs or, as ZABS likes to say, special talents.  We spoke with Bentzion Groner, Executive Director about the store, and why she thought to find talent where no one else thought to look.

Camp Blue Skies: #SpotlightOnCLT Autism Awareness


Today's highlight for #SpotlightOnCLT Autism Awareness is all about Camp Blue Skies.   This camp specializes in programs for adults with disabilities.  Programs like this can be life changing not only for the adult in the program, but for the caregivers who give so much, and for the volunteers who have the honor of participating at Camp Blue Skies.

What would you like for the community to know about the challenges your organization is trying to solve?
Our students are underserved in the community due to their complex disabilities. Many families never consider private school due to tuition, but with NC grants, all families have options.

1 in 44 children in Charlotte and across the nation will be diagnosed with Autism during their lifetime.  When we sit and think about that statistic, it can mean that someone, somewhere in your circle of family, friends, or colleagues might be diagnosed with Autism.  And yet, the diagnosis can be confusing and complex, can go "unseen" or undiagnosed for years, and even though we have such high rates of need for support, there is not a wealth of resources at our disposal to help support th
