#52tuesdays: Girls Rock Charlotte

The Runaways, The Go-Go’s, The Bangles, Vixen and even Josie and the Pussycats. Girl rockers are cool. But those who encourage girls to rock? The coolest.

Meet Girls Rock Charlotte. Through its summer camps for girls ages 8-18 and rock retreats for women, Girls Rock Charlotte amplifies the confidence of ALL girls and women through the power of music. The camps are designed to build each camper's confidence in a space that encourages creativity, communication, collaboration and inclusivity.

But what makes the Girls Rock Charlotte camps so amazing? It’s all the people who volunteer and lend their time and skills to these girls so they can let out their inner rock stars.  All workshops during the week of camp are taught by leading women, musicians, artists and professionals in the Charlotte community.

Kelly Finley founded Girls Rock Charlotte in 2014 after her daughter attended a similar camp in Raleigh. Finley sought to bring the program to Charlotte and as soon as she shared her dream with other women and leaders, support quickly poured in. Friends, musicians, college students and professionals who shared her vision for a program that empowered girls and women through music all volunteered to make the first summer camp a tremendous success.

Want to join in the fun? From March 12-April 12, Girls Rock Charlotte is securing volunteers for its 2018 summer camps.

“We welcome folks who want to mentor our girls as a Band Manager, teach as a Music Instructor or pitch in on one of our Camp Crews,” said Kelly Finley, Girls Rock Charlotte Executive Director. “No music experience required … just a big heart and rockin' attitude.”

Are you over the age of 18, but have an inner rock start just screaming to be let out? Sign up for this month’s Women Rock Retreat (March 23-25), a three-day adventure bringing women from all walks of life and all levels of musical experience together, ending with a concert at Petra’s.
