SHARE Charlotte Encourages Volunteerism with DO GOOD Week, Powered by Duke Energy

April 16, 2018    in
(CHARLOTTE, N.C.) – SHARE Charlotte’s second annual DO GOOD Week, powered by Duke Energy, is underway in the Queen City. DO GOOD Week is a celebration of volunteerism during National Volunteer Week (April 15-21) and a call to action for community engagement with local nonprofit organizations through volunteer work.

Throughout the week, Charlotte residents can choose from hundreds of volunteer opportunities offered by local nonprofits. Volunteer time does not need to be served during DO GOOD Week - the call to action is to find an opportunity available anytime this year and sign up. Additionally, SHARE is encouraging nonprofit partners to offer a special “IOU” volunteer option, allowing volunteers to commit to service for a nonprofit now even if there isn’t a specific volunteer opportunity defined at this time.

DO GOOD Week also includes social events where attendees can volunteer on site. Carolinas Matchmaker Philanthrodating™ (April 18) and SHARE Charlotte’s VolunBEERing (April 21) both offer the opportunity to assist local nonprofits with timely hands-on projects while enjoying a cold beverage, compliments of each hosting venue.

DO GOOD Week sponsors are all activating in big ways!

  • Myers & Chapman Construction is hosting a Lunch & Learn led by SHARE Charlotte during DO GOOD Week, to help employees connect with volunteer opportunities based on their interests and take advantage of VTO (Volunteer Time Off) - four hours of monthly paid time off for all full time employees.
  • TIAA activated hundreds of local employees who have committed to volunteer as part of their 100 Days of Difference, celebrating TIAA’s centennial year. During DO GOOD Week they are filling multiple group project needs and will be encouraging employees to also find ways they can serve as individuals.
  • Presenting sponsor Duke Energy is encouraging all Charlotte-based employees to find opportunities and sign up in advance of their Duke Energy in Action Month (May), as well as celebrating National Lineman Appreciation Day (4/18, #ThankALineman) with a lineman volunteer project at the Charlotte Community Toolbank.

“Employee volunteerism is fundamental to Duke Energy’s 100-year legacy as a company,” said Jennifer Dewitt, director of Foundation programs and community affairs for Duke Energy. “We prioritize community service because it’s deeply ingrained in our culture and because it makes us a better company”

Some of the available volunteer opportunities promoted this week include:

“We are excited to showcase more than 400 ways our Charlotte neighbors can give their time, supporting both traditional hands-on needs as well as serving through their talents and skill sets,” says Amy Jacobs, Executive Director of SHARE Charlotte. “We hope that everyone will find an opportunity that is meaningful to them and sign up for it during DO GOOD Week!”
