Board of Directors, Member Description
Mission:
The S.T.A.R.S. Academy seeks to improve the math, English, and reading skills of children in need of educational assistance by at least two grade levels.

Position:
The Board of Directors will support the work of S.T.A.R.S. MATH & ENGLISH ACADEMY and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by S.T.A.R.S. MATH & ENGLISH ACADEMY’s chief executive officer (CEO), the Board of Director’s relationship to the organization is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected. Specific Board Member responsibilities include:
• Leadership, governance and oversight
• Serving in an advisory role to the CEO as he develops and implements S.T.A.R.S. MATH & ENGLISH ACADEMY’s strategic plan
• Reviewing outcomes and metrics created by S.T.A.R.S. MATH & ENGLISH ACADEMY for evaluating its impact, and regularly measuring its performance and effectiveness using those metrics;
• Approving S.T.A.R.S. MATH & ENGLISH ACADEMY’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities
• Contributing to an annual performance evaluation of the CEO
• Partnering with the CEO and other board members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out
• Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments
• Representing S.T.A.R.S. MATH & ENGLISH ACADEMY to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization
• Ensuring S.T.A.R.S. MATH & ENGLISH ACADEMY’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities S.T.A.R.S. MATH & ENGLISH ACADEMY serves




Fundraising:
S.T.A.R.S. MATH & ENGLISH ACADEMY Board Members will consider S.T.A.R.S. MATH & ENGLISH ACADEMY a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. So that S.T.A.R.S. MATH & ENGLISH ACADEMY can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals, S.T.A.R.S. MATH & ENGLISH ACADEMY expects to have 100 percent of Board Members make an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity.

Board terms/participation:
S.T.A.R.S. MATH & ENGLISH ACADEMY’s Board Members will serve a three-year term to be eligible for re-appointment for one additional term. Board meetings will be held quarterly, and committee meetings will be held in coordination with full board meetings.

Qualifications:
This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about S.T.A.R.S. MATH & ENGLISH ACADEMY’s mission and who has a passion for community support. An ideal board of director’s member will also be able to successfully commit an average of 4 hours per month to S.T.A.R.S. Math & English Academy.

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:
• Extensive professional experience with significant passion for service and volunteerism
• A commitment to and understanding of S.T.A.R.S. MATH & ENGLISH ACADEMY’s beneficiaries, preferably based on experience or interest
• Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals
• Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of S.T.A.R.S. MATH & ENGLISH ACADEMY’s beneficiaries
• Be able to commit at least four (4) hours per month to the organization
