Volunteer Opportunity:

Career Coach

Career Coach Objective: To increase the network/ social capital for a high school student, while providing career guidance, support and insight into a career pathway. This position time implementation is flexible. Earliest Time: 4pm during school and summer programming Earliest 12pm. Each module session takes an hour to implement.

Career Coach Volunteer Responsibilities:

• Communicate with mentee on a monthly basis.
• Complete the 6 modules that will help the coach:
* Create a resume, Establish/Update Linkedin Profile, mock interview, 30 question career assessment and identify college and vocational options.
• Provide ongoing communication updates with TAOGA staff pertaining to the assigned mentee.
• Provide a safe and learning relationship with mentee in a virtual space.
• Be available to assist students with college related questions and/or concerns.
• Help with assisting students with identifying personal goals and developing leadership skills.

• Must be able to complete volunteer related training.
• Be able to commit a minimum of 1.5 hour a month to your coach and mentee relationship.
• Coaches may not have a mentee to currently match with during this process; but will be placed in our pool to utilize in the future.
• Be able to complete a volunteer application and able to pass a background screening.
• Feel confident in building a respectful and empowering relationship with a mentee that comes from a different background, race and socio-economic background than yourself.

Importance of Role and Impact: A recent Harvard University study revealed that of the nation’s largest cities Charlotte ranked 50th out of 50 in economic mobility. As a result of this study a nonpartisan group was commissioned, The Charlotte Mecklenburg Opportunity Task Force and their report identified three determinants most likely to influence the trajectory of an individual life as: Early Care and Education, College and Career Readiness and Child & Family Stability. The report stated, a child's chances of success increases by 60% with a consistent mentor in their life. As a career coach, you are helping a young adult increase their world, increase their aspirations and the chance that their life goal will be accomplished. It takes a community to improve economic mobility and to ensure everyone has equal opportunity for success.
