Creative Shifts: New Gods and Mythological Figures (ONLINE)

Shanequa Gay explores place, tradition, storytelling, and subject matter to develop imaginative dialogues around the legacies and memories of Black women. Through installations, paintings, and performance, she fabricates environments of ritual and memorial, transforming familiar iconography into new gods and mythical figures who embody the lives of those who have been impacted by systemic inequalities. Gay’s work speaks to hybrid cultures that have often been rendered invisible, whose identities have been denied.

Visiting curator Jonell Logan meets with Gay virtually for a candid conversation on her powerful practice and the meaning of Black womanhood. Giving a glimpse into her art of re-imagined narratives, Gay will discuss the construction and deconstruction of visual language through female ancestors.
