What We Do
Equality North Carolina is the largest advocacy group and political lobbying organization in North Carolina focused on LGBTQ rights and the liberation of marginalized folks. With a 40 year history, ENC is the oldest statewide organization in America dedicated to LGBTQ rights.
Equality NC began in 1979 as the North Carolina Human Rights Fund, later renamed Equality North Carolina in 2002. ENC now functions as an umbrella group of two separate nonprofit corporations and a political action committee. These arms of Equality NC all work in tandem with one another with the shared goal of securing equal rights and protections for the most vulnerable North Carolinians.
Over the years, Equality NC has played an integral role in watershed moments for LGBTQ North Carolinians, including blocking a 2004 constitutional amendment prohibiting same-sex marriages, fighting for adoption rights for LGBTQ families, pushing for hospital visitation rights for same-sex partners and responding to the international outcry surrounding House Bill 2 and its targeting of transgender North Carolinians.
In 2018, ENC reaffirmed its commitment to fighting for LGBTQ folks across every community -- and expanded its areas of focus to all communities who experience marginalization or discrimination across the state of North Carolina.
