What We Do
First Purse, Inc. empowers girls and their communities to be financially literate, invest in their communities and to own their “first purse” of financial independence. Founded by Rev. Renee L. Bradford in 2007, First Purse, Inc. is based on the Biblical parable of the five talents, which emphasizes the importance of investing your God-given gifts and resources into the community and making good choices that allow you to prosper and sustain. The main concept is to spend only what you need and – if needed - repay back everything that is borrowed. We believe that current model of waiting until high school to introduce personal money management concepts is too late. Our unique solution is to educate early and often. First Purse, Inc. is a volunteer led organization that strives to strengthen families to understand their money mindsets: who they are; what their values are; and why they should give. Our 6-week, age appropriate classes are offered throughout the year through partnering organizations. At the completion of each session, the graduate receives their very own “First Purse” or “First Wallet”. After graduating from an initial 6 week session, interested girls may apply for an Apprenticeship. As a First Purse Apprentice, she receives a 1:1 mentor, 3-5 years of financial literacy education by the Eighth grade, and savings matched up to $150.00.
