What We Do
Hands for Holly supports families in need who are caring for a child with cancer by providing emergency financial assistance, education & planning services.
Hands for Holly was co-founded by 14-year old Holly Wade as she battled brain cancer. Our vision is to eliminate Cancer Related Financial Toxicity (CRFT) by providing a continuum of assistance for families battling childhood cancer.
We do this by paying emergency expenses, i.e. mortgage, utilities, groceries, transportation, and more. We also coordinate free access to pro-bono certified financial planners and financial education tools to alleviate financial stress, and give families the ability to focus on accessing care and getting well.
IMPACT OF COVOD-19 - SPECIFIC NEEDS:
Our families already face serious financial barriers, but they are now compounded by COVID-19. Here are just a few ways they are being impacted:
A mother who has already cut her work hours to be by her child’s side is suddenly unable to work while her employer shuts down. Her income is now down to zero.
Families who have to travel for their child's treatment are now faced with the challenges of canceled flights.
Weekly grocery, childcare and even utility bills are increasing for families who now have their children home while school is canceled.
While there is an increased need for the financial assistance we offer, COVID-19 is impacting the way Hands for Holly operates. We raise funds to serve families and this is done through events and by personally connecting and bridging relationships with supporters. Knowing it will affect our revenue, we have canceled all events and in-person meetings through the end of May. We, like so many other nonprofits, operate in a marginal financial position, which makes these sorts of impacts difficult to absorb.
