Camp Blue Skies provides five days and four nights of recreation, fun, and friendship for high-functioning adults with cognitive and developmental disabilities such as Down syndrome, Autism, and Williams syndrome. Our fall camps are at YMCA Camp Harrison near Wilkesboro, about 90 miles northwest of Charlotte.
Who is eligible?
EMT, paramedic, nursing students, certified nursing assistants, medication technicians, current/retired nurses.

Training, support, housing, and all meals are provided! A stipend is available. Signing up for a full session is preferred, but a day or two is an option.
What you'll do
You'll work with Shira Charpentier, RN, our Health Services Director, to:
- Provide basic first aid
- Distribute prescribed medications to our campers
- Treat any accidents or injuries
- ENJOY CAMP and be a part of changing lives! The campers will change yours. 😃
Camp Life
- Nurses are on site 24 hours/day to handle medical needs,
- Cabins have heat/AC, bathrooms, and showers
- The camper-to-counselor ratio is approximately 2:1
- Each cabin group has a volunteer who has experience with this population
Camp Activities
Our three-pronged approach focuses on Recreation, Socialization, and Life Skills education and provides opportunities to be active, learn things, and make friends.
- Recreational activities: Fishing, nature walks, and field games
- Socialization activities: Interactive drumming, games, and final night dance
- Life Skills education: Nutrition classes, innovative arts/crafts, and team-building.
