Charlotte Unites for #GivingTuesdayCLT

Written by Addie Rising    on November 29, 2016    in
At midnight, local nonprofit SHARE Charlotte wraps its 3rd annual #GivingTuesdayCLT campaign, presented by Google Fiber and Wells Fargo. The two-week campaign (Nov. 15 - 29) has engaged more than 170 nonprofits partners, 80 businesses, and the community in a challenge to raise $8 million dollars.

Today is Giving Tuesday, a day globally known as the first day of the “giving season.” The movement was created five years ago by the 92nd Street Y in NYC and made hyperlocal by SHARE Charlotte with the inception of #GivingTuesdayCLT in 2014. The Charlotte campaign presents a unique opportunity to get everyone involved in making the city a better place. In 2015 #GivingTuesdayCLT benefited 108 nonprofits and rallied Charlotte neighbors and businesses together to raise $4.2 million dollars.

How the Community Can Support #GivingTuesdayCLT Today

Small Businesses Make Big Contributions to #GivingTuesdayCLT

Written by Addie Rising    on November 26, 2016    in
Over 80 local businesses and community partners have jumped in to support Charlotte's nonprofits in this year's #GivingTuesdayCLT campaign. And many more support our city's nonprofits every day of the year. Much like the nonprofits, our city's small businesses are a necessary part of this community that need our support. While one day does not seem like enough, please consider supporting Charlotte's small businesses today on "Small Business Saturday."

Today Fran's Filling Station (2410 Park Rd.) is serving meatballs and spaghetti all day with 75 percent of the proceeds going to the Charlotte Rescue Mission for #GivingTuesdayCLT.

Happy Thanksgiving, Charlotte. We are Grateful for YOU!

"Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings."
- William Arthur Ward

Thanksgiving is a time to stop, reflect and show gratitude. This year has been filled with social and political unrest for our city and nation. Our region has experienced natural disasters in the form of flooding in South Carolina, Hurricane Matthew and most recently fires in the Western Carolina mountains. The ways in which our community is divided have been on full display. But now is the time to come together.

#GivingTuesdayCLT gives Charlotte a rallying point. Over 80 local businesses and many Charlotte residents have come alongside more than 170 nonprofits as a way to lift up Charlotte. And we are grateful.

Personal Connection Sparks Ongoing Involvement with Lupus Foundation

Written by Addie Rising    on November 23, 2016    in
I’m really happy to be involved with the Lupus Foundation of America, North Carolina Chapter and the #GivingTuesdayCLT campaign this year.

I began raising money for the organization a little over two years ago after meeting my girlfriend at the time. This girl blew me away with the energy and passion that she had for life, and when she told me about how she was diagnosed at 21 years old and some of the struggles that she had gone through and continues to go through daily I immediately felt connected to her, and wanted to do anything I could to help.

A Little Good from Each of Us Will Make a Big Difference

Written by Addie Rising    on November 21, 2016    in
I had just finished school early in New York (SUNY Geneseo) and realized I wouldn't have a lot of opportunities in my hometown (land of Lucille Ball). I thought, where could I move? Considering I grew up in a town with one blinking light, one post office and Amish neighbors, Charlotte, a city I had visited a few times to see family, was attractive and "big." So, I picked up and moved South without a job and only my graduation money in my wallet.

Nurturing a Passion for GOOD

Written by Addie Rising    on November 20, 2016    in

Sunday was a great volunteer shift at The Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte with my son Connor, 11. He helped me give two big tours and bravely stepped up to speak directly to them about things I neglected to mention.  But, my favorite part was overhearing four young moms, all from different walks of life at first glance, chatting companionably in the dining area about what they were going through and sharing their difficulties and successes. Smiles, sad nods, laughter -- it was beautiful to watch.  I was off to the side, doodling quotes on the glass doors, and was inspired to pick these two: "We rise by lifting others," and "Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much."

Building a Better Charlotte

I thought I knew what made Charlotte tick.

When I moved here in 2005 with my husband and two small daughters, we were mesmerized by the tree-lined streets, the brick buildings, the greenways, the changes of season and everything in between. I quickly learned to navigate my way through all the landmarks: the huge-steepled churches, the malls, the grocery stores, other large retail chains, restaurants, gyms, dance studios, swimming pools. I thought Charlotte was amazing! Everything money could buy was so close! Charlotte's Uptown is stunning. The buildings are unique and shiny and stand out. The skyline at night is breathtaking.

Turn Your Turkey Day Gratitude Into a Great Gift

Written by Addie Rising    on November 15, 2016    in

I recently found out I will be hosting a large Thanksgiving gathering at my home this year.  What started off as just a few family members has blossomed into a both-sides-of-the-family event for which, of course, I am grateful.   I am grateful for a home to host in, for the ability to contribute to a meal and for a family who is willing to travel from both near and far to be together.

Brand New Day

The presidential election is over. Whether you're pleased with the results or devastated, it's time to turn eyes back to our home, the Queen City. What will unfold in Washington, D.C. over the next few weeks will have little impact on our community. But you know what will? #GivingTuesdayCLT which begins next week on Nov. 15.

Cast Your Vote for GOOD!

Written by Addie Rising    on November 8, 2016    in

If you didn’t participate in early voting, you’ll hopefully go cast your votes today. The act of completing the ballot and performing our civic duty evokes feelings of pride and hope, but at the end of the day we’re left reliant on all the other voters to make the same choice to earn our desired outcome. So it’s not exactly the warm, fuzzy “I’m making a difference” feeling that one might want.

But if this election season has demonstrated anything, it’s that kindness DOES matter and doing GOOD is more important that ever. And being kind and doing GOOD actually DO make a difference. Immediately.
