#52Tuesdays: Operation Homefront

Written by Nicole Copsis    on June 29, 2018    in

On July 4th, America will celebrate it’s 242nd Independence Day, commemorating our country’s adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

While many will be celebrating the holiday by donning stars and stripes or watching fireworks in the night sky, it is important that we as a nation remember what we are celebrating- freedom. We are the land of the free, because of the brave.

Founded in 2002, our nonprofit partner Operation Homefront is a national 501(c)(3) whose mission is to “Build strong, stable and secure military families so they can thrive-not simply struggle to get by- in the communities they have worked so hard to protect.”

Thompson Child and Family Focus and Pat's Place Keep Children #SafeFromHarm

Many people want to make a change in their communities, they just don’t know how. SHARE Charlotte has hundreds of valuable community resources all in one centralized location. I look forward to sharing several of those resources monthly, in order to encourage you to put your good intent to action.

A nation-wide statistic shows that 90% of children are victimized by someone they know and trust. According to the Council for Children’s Rights, nearly 40% of children reported abused or neglected were under the age of six and nearly 63% of investigated reports include more than one child victim. In June, SHARE Charlotte is featuring organizations that keep members of our community #SafeFromHarm.  Thompson Child and Family Focus and Pat’s Place are two hard working nonprofits that focus on child abuse prevention.

#52Tuesdays: Carolina Family Connections- Shakil's Story

Written by Nicole Copsis    on June 26, 2018    in

Where is it that you feel safest? While many people have the luxury of answering “at home”, others are constantly worried about what awaits them- for some, home is not where the heart is.

Thousands of children in North Carolina enter foster care each year because they are no longer safe in their homes and are in need of a foster family to care for them and, during this transitional and fragile time in a child’s life, Carolina Family Connections (CFC) is there.

CFC recruits, licenses, trains, and supervises family foster homes to provide out-of-home placements for children who have been abused and/or neglected. Their social work staff are dedicated to both the children and foster families and advocate for all possible resources necessary to meet their needs.

#SafeFromHarm: Affordable Housing Crisis in CLT Keeps Some in Harm's Way

June 21, 2018    in

Charlotte can be a costly place to live, especially with the average rent climbing higher and higher, it’s becoming impossible for some people to live alone, even if that’s what they want. Public conversation often circles around solving the affordable housing shortage, but little is discussed about how the lack of affordable housing causes unsafe living situations, leaving some fellow Charlotteans tethered to unsafe home lives. Because of SHARE Charlotte’s network of nonprofit agencies working to help those in harm’s way. There are plenty of ways to help, if we know where to start.

#SafeFromHarm: Taking a Brave Step

Written by Grant Stimmel    on June 20, 2018    in

Two words.

Five letters.

42 million survivors.

Simple, but powerful:

Me too.

A short phrase that sparked a big movement one which was eye-opening for some, and long overdue for others. An acknowledgement, finally, that there are an untold number of people who’ve been deeply, deeply scarred in their past.

These survivors know now what they may not have before that they’re far from alone. That there are millions of others who’ve been sexually abused, assaulted, or harassed. And that while they’ve inevitably been changed by what’s happened to them, they live on, they fight, they keep pounding.

Through safety, connection and healing.

#52Tuesdays: Erika Carney

Written by Nicole Copsis    on June 12, 2018    in

Sometimes life has a way of coming full circle. For Erika Carney, the last six years have done just that- taking her on a journey that all started when she was first introduced to SHARE Charlotte in 2012.

Carney first learned about SHARE Charlotte when it was just an idea.

She was working for Skookum, the local software development firm in charge of first creating the online platform that would become SHARE Charlotte. Founder of SHARE Charlotte and Share Good, Kelly Brooks, was one of her very first clients and Carney played a part in the creation of sharecharlotte.org by assisting with market research, conducting user interviews, crafting user personas and, of course, participating in user testing- making Carney one of the first official users of the SHARE Charlotte platform.

Spotlight Series 2018

Written by Nicole Copsis    on June 7, 2018    in
Each month, SHARE Charlotte refocuses it's Spotlight Series on a different cause or issue effecting our city and shines a light on our nonprofit partners who work within that sector to strengthen Charlotte. The first step to driving out darkness is to shine a light on it, and our Spotlight Series aims to do just that while also showcasing which of our nonprofit partners are doing the hard work that will lead to a more informed, compassionate, and welcoming city.

Keeping Animals #SafeFromHarm

Keeping Animals #SafeFromHarm

For many people, their pet is another member of the family. You love them, take care of them, and find comfort in being around them- you couldn’t imagine anything bad ever happening to them. You especially could never imagine doing anything to hurt them yourself.

As we explore the different forms of abuse and our nonprofit partners who are fighting to keep our community #SafeFromHarm this month, it is important that we open our eyes to the reality of animal abuse.

Abusers do not discriminate. In fact, data has shown that there is a large correlation between individuals who abuse their significant others or children and those who abuse animals. One survey found  71% of domestic violence victims reported that their abuser also targeted pets, and another revealed that pet abuse had occurred in 88% of families under investigation for child abuse.

Spotlight Series: #SafeFromHarm

June Spotlight Series: #SafeFromHarm

This June, SHARE Charlotte’s Spotlight Series: #SafeFromHarm, presented by The Relocation Guide, will focus on our local nonprofit partners who raise awareness about abuse as well as offer services to victims of abuse in all of its forms. These organizations each offer a different approach to keeping individuals #SafeFromHarm, whether that means healing and supporting those who have faced abuse and are now coping with the aftermath, or going out into our community to rescue those who cannot necessarily save themselves from harm’s way.
