Do Some Good Over Spring Break

Spring and (for some) Spring Break has officially begun. Thanks to Queen Charlotte the Groundhog it has been wonderfully warm for quite some time making this week the perfect time to get outdoors and enjoy all this season has to offer. While you’re at it, consider showing some love to these nonprofits who work to preserve our natural surroundings for everyone (human and wildlife alike) to enjoy.

Carolina Thread Trail is a growing network of greenways and trails that spread across multiple counties including Mecklenburg County. Charlotteans may be most familiar with Little Sugar Creek Greenway and Ruth G. Shaw Trail. Currently, they are looking for volunteers to join their Community Trail Work Day on Saturday, April 8. If you can’t make it, consider buying items they need off their Give Shop wish list.

Often times we take for granted the thing we need to survive -- air. Clean Air Carolina works to educate the community on the importance of clean air, the dangers of pollution and its effect on our health. Right now they need volunteers for their upcoming NC Breathe Conference and their Particle Falls art installation at UNC Charlotte Center City.

If nature trails aren’t your thing, this hidden gem might be for you. Wing Haven Gardens & Bird Sanctuary encompasses almost three acres in the heart of Charlotte with curated gardens and small wildlife. The gardens are open to the public but you can support their work by working as a Nursery volunteer.

Few people may know that Catawba Lands Conservancy oversees the Carolina Thread trails. Their main gig is land conservation which also includes farmland which directly affects wildlife, our local drinking water and so much more. Catawba Lands Conservancy, as well as the other nonprofits, could use your dollars to continue the work they do.

This spring, take a moment to enjoy what Mother Nature has to offer but also thank those who work to take care of nature.
