Stories

Some call it stories. Others call it a blog. But here you will find nuggets of goodness to use and -- you guessed it -- SHARE!

Go Local for Read Across America Day!

Here at SHARE Charlotte, we love to read! We also know how important books are - how they can ignite imaginations, foster empathy and change the world. Yet, there are so many children who either don’t read very well or know how to read at all.

Here in Charlotte, we can change this. In honor of Read Across America Day, we’ve compiled a list of local nonprofits dedicated to strengthening literacy in our communities.

Augustine Literacy Project works to improve the reading, writing, and spelling skills of low-income students who struggle with literacy. They recruit and train volunteers to work with first and second graders. The program is free to students.

Reading Partners works with under sourced elementary schools and provides community volunteers to help students improve their reading skills. They work primarily with students who are reading up to 2.5 years below grade level. They have several volunteer opportunities in elementary schools all around Charlotte.

First Book Charlotte relies on an all volunteer network to help children from low income families read. They acquire and distribute books to schools and communities all around Charlotte.

The YMCA of Greater Charlotte offers a literacy program as well. Their Y Readers program is an after-school program that serves students in grades K-3 who are reading below grade level. They are currently looking for volunteers.

Promising Pages provides books, as presents to children growing up with few, if any, age-appropriate books at home. Often times these young bookworms need some words of encouragement - write Bookworm letters to inspire them to continue reading.

If you don’t have time to volunteer, it’s okay! All of these nonprofits will appreciate books or financial donations. Finally, don’t forget to pick up a book today, whether it’s for yourself or someone else.

Share With Us!

We have so much great news to share from our nonprofit partners about their amazing work. But, we'd love to hear from you. Let us know if you have stories you'd like to tell and we'll make you a guest blogger!!
