Healthy Leader, Healthy Culture: Mental Health Series
Provided by Novant Health
During May, as we shine a #SpotlightOnCLT Mental Health with McLeod Centers for Wellbeing, we’re proud to highlight the vital work of local nonprofits supporting the mental well-being of our community.
Recognizing that nonprofit leaders face unique pressures, Novant Health is stepping up to support those at the helm. In response to the 2023 Nonprofit Leader Survey - conducted in partnership by SHARE Charlotte and the Charlotte Executive Leadership Council (CELC) - a clear need emerged: mental health support for nonprofit leaders and their teams.
Novant Health, a key member of CELC’s Healthy Communities Committee, led by Marissa Michaels, recognized an opportunity to make a meaningful impact. In 2024, they launched the Healthy Leader, Healthy Culture: Mental Health Series, a dedicated initiative designed to equip nonprofit leaders with the tools, resources, and expert guidance needed to prioritize mental wellnes for themselves and their organizations.
“As a nonprofit health system, our work to create a healthier future extends beyond the walls of our facilities,” said Marissa Michaels, VP of Employer Solutions, Novant Health. ““We’ve seen success at our own organization with well-being programs designed to enhance both the emotional and physical health of our team members, and this mental health series is a natural extension of that work. We are dedicated to helping nonprofit leaders, team members and organizations thrive.”
The series consisted of three 90-minute training sessions leveraging Novant Health experts in the area of mental health, resilience and wellbeing.
- The first session in May kicked off with Dr. Victoria King an expert on Team Culture and Performance.
- The second session in September with, Dr. Uma Suryadevara a psychiatry expert.
- The third session in December was with Dr. Joanne Perry who is a specialist in athlete performance and mental health.
More than 80 nonprofit organizations attended the sessions and received practical expertise to ensure they are attuning to their mental health for peak performance as well as receiving a mental health toolkit to share with their teams.
Here is some of their feedback:
- 100% Report “satisfied with the seminar content”
- 100% Report “finding the seminar topics relevant”
- 100% Report “increased knowledge of mental health in the workspace”
- 100% Report “interested in attending in future events”
- “This has been an incredible series. My goal is to share this with our teachers and our parent program. This is powerful and could benefit many. Thank you! Well done!”
As part of their work on the Healthy Communities Committee, Novant Health is evaluating topics needed from nonprofit leaders to continue the series.
