Make Going Back to School Easy for All Charlotte Students

Written by Addie Rising    on August 14, 2016

As students head back to school, many are filled with anticipation.  New clothes, new books and a new year can bring a lot of excitement.

However, the reality is that over half of our region’s students will return to school unprepared. For these students, feelings of embarrassment or unpreparedness can create stress and anxiety and have the opposite effect on excitement for learning.

Classroom Central equips students living in poverty to effectively learn by collecting and distributing free school supplies.  Serving six school districts and 200 schools, it is our goal to make sure these children have the tools to succeed in school.

Our Classroom Central 2016 Summer Collection goal is big – 1.8 million supplies.  Luckily, we have a great partnership with WSOC-TV Channel 9 through the #9SchoolTools campaign that helps support our goal, along with another nonprofit, Communities in Schools.
There are several ways that you can help Classroom Central this week:
On Monday, Aug. 15, United Healthcare is offering free Charlotte Knights field box seats for fans who bring at least $5 of school supplies.

Wednesday, Aug. 17, we’ll be at WSOC Studios at 1901 N. Tryon Street from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. for the #9SchoolTools Collection Day, accepting supplies along with news personalities.
Finally, on Saturday, Aug. 20USPS will be picking up any school supplies you leave at your mailbox for #9SchoolTools. Leave supplies, or spread the word in your neighborhood by promoting on your neighborhood social media or email, or handing out flyers.
If you can’t help this week, there are plenty of ways to help Classroom Central in the future.  You can volunteer, or do a future school supply or book drive.  Visit to learn more.
