Show Your Good: Where to Begin

Get involved. Support your community. Make a difference. Give back.

If you have access to the internet, you’ve heard all that before. At SHARE Charlotte, we believe that as Charlotte residents we should all get involved to support our community, make a difference and give back! But, we hope to make it easy and FUN for you.

Whether you’ve lived in Charlotte for a long time or are one of our area’s new residents, we know that understanding the city’s nonprofit community can be daunting. In fact, that’s why SHARE Charlotte exists. In 2012, founder Kelly Brooks saw a need for an easy way to connect the community to nonprofits. Today, connects to more than 400 nonprofits all serving Mecklenburg County.

Giving Back is the New BlackSo, what do we want? We want to make it easy for you to begin your philanthropic journey in Charlotte.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself to get started:

What do you care about?
You might be thinking, “I care about everything,” and that’s awesome! But you won’t be able to help every organization or every person who needs help. So let’s pick one. SHARE Charlotte makes it very easy to explore different causes through our filters. Philanthropy is personal. Whatever need in our community you may wish to help address may not be the same as your neighbor and that’s OK! That’s great, actually. Our community is large enough that we can all do something for someone!

How do you want to get involved?
Do you have free time to give? Do you have money? The good news is, our nonprofit partners need both, all the time! Once you determine who you’d like to help, you can better determine how you’ll help.

Giving your time
By searching volunteer opportunities through SHARE Charlotte, you’ll see needs for skill-based volunteers — photographers, social media consultants, lawyers, accountants, event planners, graphic designers, etc. — and also for traditional service opportunities (serving meals, contraction, planting) and many mentoring opportunities. There are volunteer opportunities that you can do just one time, or you can commit to once a month or even once a week.

Giving money
Nonprofit organizations need funding to operate. All money received helps with everything from keeping lights on in offices, to providing materials for programs. Financial donations of any size are always welcome by nonprofit organizations. You can make philanthropy part of your annual budget by allocating a certain amount each month to donate to organizations of your choice.

Giving goods
If giving money isn’t your thing, check out SHARE Charlotte’s Give Shop. On Give Shop, you can shop for specific items nonprofits need to run their business and programs. While you may not want to write a $50 check, you may be much more comfortable spending the same amount of money on dog toys for the Humane Society. And that’s OK! That is why Give Shop exists. Plus, you can shop in your pajamas on a rainy Sunday and know that you’re doing GOOD!

What are you waiting for? If you do nothing else, scan SHARE Charlotte and learn about some of our partner nonprofits. Don't forget to sign up for our weekly emails for easy ways to do good delivered right to your inbox.
