#SpotlightOnCLT: Black Philanthropy Month 2021

Written by Sarah Haylett    on July 27, 2021

August is Black Philanthropy Month, and like last year, we are honored to help champion this NGAAP (New Generation of African American Philanthropists) - led conversation and celebration of #BPM2021CLT - Charlotte’s local celebration of Black Philanthropy Month, alongside other organizing partners The National Pan-Hellenic Council of CharlotteMy Brother’s Keeper Charlotte-Mecklenburg (MBK-CLT MECK) and the YMCA of Greater Charlotte. What is Black Philanthropy Month?

Black Philanthropy Month (BPM), held every August, was created in 2011 by Dr. Jackie Bouvier Copeland and the Pan-African Women’s Philanthropy Network as an annual global celebration of African-descent giving. BPM culminates with a giving day on August 28 initiated by Young, Black, and Giving Back Institute to promote financial support for Black-led and Black-benefitting organizations.

SHARE Charlotte’s Role in #BPM2021CLT?

Throughout the month of August, we will be dedicating all of our content and social media channels to highlight our Black-led and Black-benefitting nonprofit partners, as well as leveraging our community, corporate, and media partnerships, to help celebrate and encourage Black philanthropy.

Specifically, our content series, #SpotlightOnCLT presented by TIAA, will illuminate the work of our 110+ Black-led and Black-benefitting nonprofit partners and feature stories that will educate our community about the racial inequities that exist - even in philanthropy - as well as highlight the importance of supporting Black-led organizations. We will be introducing the community to Black-led organizations through an Instagram photo series, interviews in the first season of our Spotlight on CLT podcast, special interest pieces, and in our weekly community-facing newsletter, Thursday SHARE (subscribe here).

In an effort to feature as many of our 110+ Black-led and Black-benefitting nonprofit partners this month, we organized them by the following causes.
