#SpotlightOnCLT: Black Philanthropy Month

In late 2019 our SHARE Charlotte team began planning our themed Spotlight content for the upcoming year, and we knew we wanted to feature Black Philanthropy Month in August. However, as we looked around the room at our six white faces we realized that while we had the platform and the channels to host a big conversation, it was obvious that a celebration of Black Philanthropy Month was not ours to lead. We knew it would be inauthentic without the perspective, leadership and voices of Black community leaders and philanthropists.

A great friend of SHARE (and to the entire Charlotte community), Michael DeVaul with the YMCA of Greater Charlotte, offered to help us meaningfully connect with local leaders who he identified as voices needed at the table. One in particular was author, local philanthropist and co-founding member of NGAAP Charlotte member, Valaida Fullwood. That introduction began a journey, which led to a partnership and inevitably a friendship as we explored together how best to celebrate Black Philanthropy Month here in Charlotte. Through Michael and Valaida’s shared networks, a collaboration between influential Black leaders and our SHARE Charlotte team began.

And finally - August is here!  We are honored to help champion this NGAAP- led conversation and celebration of #BPM2020CLT- Charlotte’s local celebration of Black Philanthropy Month, alongside other organizing partners The National Pan-Hellenic Council of Charlotte , My Brother’s Keeper Charlotte-Mecklenburg (MBK-CLT MECK) and the YMCA of Greater Charlotte

What is Black Philanthropy Month?

Black Philanthropy Month (BPM), held every August, was created in 2011 by Dr. Jackie Bouvier Copeland and the Pan-African Women’s Philanthropy Network as an annual global celebration of African-descent giving.  BPM culminates with a giving day on August 28 initiated by Young, Black and Giving Back Institute to promote financial support for Black-led and Black-benefiting grassroots organizations.

SHARE Charlotte’s Role in #BPM2020CLT?

Throughout the month of August we will be dedicating all our content and social media channels, as well as leveraging our community, corporate and media partnerships, to help celebrate and encourage Black philanthropy.

Specifically, our monthly #SpotlightOnCLT will illuminate the work of our 80+ Black-led, Black-benefitting nonprofit partners and feature stories that will educate our community about the racial inequities that exist - even in philanthropy - as well as highlight the importance of supporting Black-led organizations.

***Additionally, thanks to the generosity of our #SpotlightOnCLT presenting partner the Amy and Brian France Foundation, we get to give away $5K to one of our nonprofit partners listed below - determined by YOUR VOTE!***

In March, we read something written by one of our Black-led nonprofit partners that really resonated with our team. The author shared that one great way to advocate for our Black neighbors is to support Black philanthropy, and this month we invite you to advocate in this way.

We’ll be introducing you to these Black-led organizations and inviting you to support them all month long, so be sure to follow us on Instagram for daily features and check back regularly for new stories, here!
