Turtle Dogs

Plan to join us for this exciting presentation led by one of the Allison Woods Turtle Dogs and their trainer, participants will learn about the Eastern Box Turtle, the importance of indicator species in our ecosystems, identity determination, habitat, and more. Participants will get to see a short demonstration on how the dogs are able to effectively aid in tracking the turtles and assist conservationists in their research.

A little bit about Allison Woods Outdoor Learning Center-Allison Woods Outdoor Learning Center (OLC) is a 501(c)3 Non-profit organization located in Statesville, NC. The OLC was formed in 1992, becoming the first North Carolina Environmental Education Center in Iredell County in 1993, with a mission to get children back outside and learning in nature. Now the Outdoor Learning Center serves over 6,000 kids annually through field trip programs, library outreach programs, 4-H, girl scouts, spring and summer camps, and more. The OLC operates solely on donations and grants to provide an opportunity for children to reconnect with nature.

Dennis Goodin, Director of Animal Education- A retired chemist, Mr. Goodin has been with the Outdoor Learning Center for over 10 years, he handles all aspects of animal education programs and animal training.

Paige Jackson, Director of Education- Mrs. Jackson has been part of the Allison Woods OLC team since 2013. She handles field trip planning and execution, volunteer recruitment, Girl Scout Programming, and is leader of the Aqua-Sprouts 4-H Club.
