CYC Overview

The Carolina Youth Coalition (CYC) prepares high-achieving, under-resourced high school students – called “Fellows” – to enter, excel in, and graduate
from college so they can become full participants in society.
CYC’s Support of Writing Coaches
Our Director of College Programs will oversee the CYC’s Writing Coach program and lead ongoing coordination and support of Writing Coaches.
Writing Coaches will be in communication with our Director of College Programs regarding specific needs for Senior Fellows during the college
application process.

Program Structure
As skilled, experienced writers, volunteer Writing Coaches are one of the key resources our CYC will offer Fellows. Writing Coaches support Fellows
through weekly, hour-long, one-on-one coaching sessions, which Fellows have to sign up for in advance through an online appointment system. We
ask Writing Coaches to commit to two real-time coaching sessions per week, either in person or remotely (via Google Docs and/or video conferencing).
Introductory Meeting: Writing Coaches will be asked to attend one introductory meeting led by our Executive Director and the Director of College
Programs. The meeting is an orientation to CYC’s Writing Program and the supports it offers Fellows. Additionally, our leadership team will share their expectations of Writing Coaches and resources for providing Fellows with feedback.

Expectations of Writing Coaches
• Develop strong rapport and trust with Fellows to earn their confidence in the writing process.
• Fulfill the weekly time commitment as outlined above.
• Communicate reliably with the Director of College Programs.
Qualifications
• Exceptionally strong written communication skills
• Experience, formally or informally, teaching or tutoring in writing
• Experience working effectively with youth, preferably in an educationa lsetting
• Ability to explain foundational grammatical and rhetorical concepts
