Common Wealth Charlotte

Event:
How Did We Get Here?

Join Common Wealth Charlotte (CWC) and Charlotte Historian Tom Hanchett for How Did We Get Here?, CWC's signature event during Financial Literacy Month.

Charlotte thrives as a major financial hub, tracing its prosperity back to the discovery of America's first gold mine in 1799. Serving as America's second-largest financial center, Charlotte boasts over 100,000 banking professionals. However, Charlotte is one of America's most economically segregated communities, with hundreds of thousands facing financial instability and enduring inequities in housing, healthcare, transportation, education, and wages.

So, how did we get here?

Through a blend of history, art, and interactive exhibits, you'll learn the continued effects of urban renewal on generational wealth, and other significant factors contributing to Charlotte's ongoing financial disparity. As our guest, you will gain a deeper understanding of the enduring financial consequences of economic and racial segregation, and be presented with an opportunity to contribute to a solution aimed at addressing these disparities.
