Overview and Purpose
The purpose of the Leadership Board of the American Lung Association is to assist the local office in its mission to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease. This can be accomplished in several ways, including but not limited to:

  • To raise the profile of the American Lung Association in the communities we serve
  • To advocate for lung health through public policy initiatives
  • To increase revenue and resources through fundraising activities to support local programs and services

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Serve as an ambassador, champion, and advocate for the American Lung Association
  • Participate in orientation and educational activities, remaining current with the ALA’s mission work and local events and initiatives
  • Provide leadership and participation in developing, evaluating, and achieving the Association’s annual market goals, including and not limited to health promotion, public policy, and revenue generation
  • Actively participate in the identification of revenue channels for the Lung Association, including, and not limited to, special event sponsorships, new donor recruitment and cultivation, and securing corporate and foundation partnerships
  • Sign up and participate in the nationwide E-Advocacy program
  • Serve as spokesperson representing the Lung Association before governmental, professional, medical organizations, and the media when applicable
  • Connect a diverse group of community leaders to the work of the American Lung Association by engaging new companies, organizations, and individuals from your sphere of influence 
  • Annually, each member shall meet with the Executive Director to complete an Annual Commitment form, acknowledging and agreeing to their duties and responsibilities for the year ahead
  • Uphold the American Lung Association's values of diversity, equity, and inclusion (“DEI”) in the governance and operations of the Board
  • Support the identification of the local lung health needs in the community and bring awareness to available Lung Association resources to meet those needs
  • Present issues, ideas, and/or concerns to the Regional Board via your local representative(s)

Expectations

  • Attend and actively participate in at least 4 out of 6 Local Leadership Board Meetings
  • Volunteer for or recruit at least one sub-committee member on an annual basis
  • Make an annual contribution commensurate with your giving potential 
  • All Board members will financially support the Association, and “open doors” within their sphere of influence for financial support of the Association to achieve a minimum annual Give/Get.

Time Commitment

  • The Leadership Board will meet at least six (6) times per year
  • Members are encouraged to participate in and attend at least two signature events annually, including: Fight for Air Climb, LUNG FORCE Turquoise Tasting, and NC Community Connections
