Volunteer Opportunity:
Operation Save Christmas

This opportunity has passed.

Love in Action Project Inc. Operation Save Christmas is a community initiative that brings joy and support to nursing home residents during the holiday season. Its mission is to provide Christmas gifts to nursing home residents who would otherwise not receive them. We answer the call from nursing homes that need assistance getting their residents gifts.

Help Us Bring Joy and Connection to Nursing Home Residents with a Christmas Box

πŸŽ„Christmas is a special time of year, filled with joy and warmth as people come together to share love, kindness, and connection. It's the time of year when families and friends gather to create lasting memories. However, for some nursing home residents, that is not the case; Christmas can be lonely, a difficult reminder of what they're missing.

December 09, 2021, we received a call for help from a local nursing home. The activity director, Ms. Kimberly, reached out to us with a simple yet profound request: to help them get Christmas gifts and bring joy to residents who would otherwise not receive a gift and would spend the holiday alone. Ms. Kimberly shared that some of her residents don't have family members; some don't have people to visit them or even give them gifts. She talked about the misconception that those in nursing homes have everything they need, which is far from the truth. I was left speechless, in tears, and hurt. Hearing Ms. Kimberly share this sad reality about the most vulnerable in our community was awful.

We sprang into action and reached out to our community, whose response was miraculous. Inspired by this overwhelming support and this great need, Operation Save Christmas was born. Since then, we have answered calls from nursing home facilities, transforming the lives of nursing home residents during the holiday season.

The Challenge We Face: 60% of nursing home residents do not receive regular visitors. Putting them at greater risk for abuse and health decline. Loneliness is not just a fleeting emotion; it is a serious issue that severely impacts the quality of life for many seniors. Socially isolated seniors have a 59% higher risk of physical and mental health decline, heart disease, high blood pressure, and dementia compared to those who enjoy regular social interaction.

πŸ’«This year, our goal is to raise $10,000 to fill 300 Christmas boxes with wish list items for nursing home residents who would otherwise not receive a gift. Each box will contain eight thoughtful items designed to bring joy and comfort. These gifts will provide practical support and a sense of care and belonging for the recipients. Each Christmas box will be hand-delivered directly to the nursing home residents, ensuring a personal connection with each recipient.

The Impact of Your Support: By supporting Operation Save Christmas, you combat loneliness and social isolation among nursing home residents. Your Christmas box is a tangible reminder that the residents are cherished, loved, and remembered, improving their emotional well-being and reducing feelings of loneliness. According to research by John Cacioppo, social isolation or even the perception of isolation can increase inflammation in the body to the same degree as physical inactivity (Cacioppo et al., 2015). Your contribution fosters a sense of community, connection, and healing for the recipients and our community. This initiative is a testament to the power of collective effort and the difference we can make when we come together.
