Volunteers will tutor in "Active Reading" to small groups of 2-3 kids in Kindergarten - third grade for 30-minute time blocks as part of the children's after-school program from 4:30 - 6:00 pm. Active Reading is an evidence-based approach where the tutor reads WITH the student rather than to him or her. Children will receive active reading tutoring three times a week to develop a love of reading and increase their vocabulary comprehension.
Tutor training involves one-hour individual virtual or in-person instruction through the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library (Reading Buddies training). CMS background check for volunteers is required (https://cmsvolunteers.com). The only skill needed is basic reading; we will teach tutoring protocols and provide all reading materials at no cost. Tutoring time slots are at 4:30 pm and 5:15 pm every Monday through Wednesday—volunteer for one 30-minute time slot or more than one at the same time each week.
