What We Do

For over 38 years, the Charlotte Film Society (CFS) has been dedicated to bringing independent, foreign, and classic arthouse cinema to the Charlotte region. In 2016, the society was granted 501 (c)(3) status but was originally founded as a nonprofit in 1982.

In 2020, the CFS decided to sign a letter of intent to build a community cinema, The Independent Picture House (IPH). IPH will continue the film society's mission to showcasing diverse cinema and will be the only Charlotte area movie theatre dedicated to independent film. This non-profit theatre will also be an access point for local filmmaker and other film exhibition groups. Along with our 365/7 film program, we will continue our tradition of providing film education and engaging our audiences in conversation with cinema elements.

Interesting Info

Every year, the Charlotte Film Society partners with other film screenings and film festivals. We pride ourselves on support the cinematic arts throughout CLT!
Charlotte is the largest city in the US without an arthouse cinema.
We want to bring diverse individuals and groups together in order to be transported, educated, and entertained by film; and to support local filmmaker projects.
