What We Do
You may be familiar with our Founder and President, DeAngelo Williams, former running back of the Carolina Panthers and the Pittsburgh Steelers, who started The DeAngelo Williams Foundation in 2006 in honor of his mother and his four aunts that all passed away from breast cancer. His mother, Sandra was the inspiration behind the NFL allowing players to wear pink cleats in 2009 (and many other pink accessories and now other awareness colors representing many other important causes).
In December 2014, The DeAngelo Williams Foundation started “53 Strong for Sandra,” an initiative for which the foundation funded 53 mammography screenings for uninsured/under-insured women in partnership with a local hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. The number of mammograms provided was a tribute to the age of DeAngelo’s mother, Sandra Hill, who passed 53 years old when she passed away. In 2016 and 2017, the foundation expanded the outreach of “53 Strong for Sandra”by funding mammograms to women in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Memphis, Tennessee, while continuing service in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 2019, we expanded to Jonesboro, AR where DeAngelo's mother received treatment. We are also currently looking to expand to other cities this year with the ultimate goal of reaching all 50 states!
