Our mission at Despierta is to transform the lives of Latina women through mental health and educational programs, empowering them to develop their talents and become leaders within their communities.

Who We Are

Despierta is a non-profit agency founded in November 2020 by Latinas in Charlotte, NC. It was birthed out of passion to help the Latina community thrive. Being that Latinas are a very underserved population in Charlotte, we aim to empower Latinas by providing support services that can help individuals thrive and strengthen families.

Our Vision 
To be a leading organization that transforms the lives of thousands of Latina women and promotes a more inclusive and equitable society. 

We provide guidance and resources that focuses on:

• Domestic Violence Awareness and Advocacy
• Family Support Services

Programs Supporting Latina Youth and Immigrant Women in Charlotte

At Despierta, we empower Latina youth and immigrant women through three transformative programs:

Bonita Rising: Bonita Rising supports adolescents ages 11-18 by helping them discover their identity, build self-worth, and grow into their potential. This program provides emotional tools to foster personal development and academic success.

Bonita Mama: Bonita Mama is dedicated to supporting adolescent mothers, offering guidance, resources, and a safe community to help them thrive as individuals and parents.

Mujer Despierta: Mujer Despierta empowers Latina women 18 and older, particularly newly arrived immigrants in Mecklenburg County, by connecting them to vital public health resources and providing the support they need to navigate their new community.

How You Can Get Involved

Support our mission by becoming a Despierta Ambassador and representing us at community events, helping organize our storage unit, serving as a mentor to the women and youth we support, or offering your expertise through in-kind services. Your involvement directly helps us create a stronger, more empowered community.

Make a Financial Investment – Every dollar you invest directly impacts the lives of the women and youth we serve, helping to provide access to essential resources in a safe, empowering environment.

Donate items such as diapers, baby wipes, bottles, diaper bags, new and gently used clothing for infants and children, maternity clothing, and personal care items.
