Mitchell’s House is a project of Mitchell’s Fund. It is a safe place offering counseling and play therapy services to children with life threatening illnesses, their siblings and parents, regardless of their ability to pay. It is the first-of-its-kind non-profit counseling center in the United States to focus on children and families facing medical trauma.
When a child is diagnosed, medical trauma impacts the entire family. Our licensed clinicians help sick children build resilience, which helps them cope and engage better with treatment. They also give siblings and parents a safe place to process feelings and learn skills to persevere.
Our licensed clinicians and play therapists provide services like:
· Trauma informed therapy and coping skills
· Medical play, art and sand tray therapy
· Sibling and parent support groups
· Procedural preparation and end of life therapy
We provide counseling services to children with the following diagnoses, their siblings and parents:
-An illness requiring multiple major surgeries
-An illness requiring multiple hospital stays
-An illness requiring regular infusions and/or multiple specialty medical visits
-An illness that reduces the child's life expectancy and/or is life threatening
-Cancer diagnoses
-Rare genetic disorders
-Cardiac conditions
-Sickle cell disease
Our referrals for clients come from social workers at Levine Childrens, Hemby Children's Hospital and its St. Jude Affiliate Clinic at Novant, Kid’s Path Hospice, Via Health and Cardinal Kids Hospice.
If your employer offers a matching gift program, you can find us using our full legal name "Mitchell Bays Turner Pediatric Fund" and our EIN 83-3595158. The Mitchell Bays Turner Pediatric Fund is a 501c3 non-profit organization, and donations are tax deductible to the extent of the law.
“Counseling from Mitchell’s House is a life raft for families like mine who are caring for their sick child. My counselor helped me prepare for my daughter’s death. I was able to share how afraid I was and talk about things I could do to survive.” Mom of a three-year-old with a terminal rare disease
