What We Do
The Paula Takacs Foundation for Sarcoma Research directly funds Levine Cancer Institute's (LCI) and Levine Children's Hospital (LCH) research and clinical trials in sarcoma, a rare cancer that strikes bones, muscles, fat, tendons, nerves and other connective tissues.
IMPACT OF COVID-19 - SPECIFIC NEEDS:
Due to the pandemic, we had to cancel our annual signature fundraiser, the Sarcoma Stomp. This directly impacts our funding of the sarcoma research program at Levine Cancer Institute and Levine Children's Hospital. Donations of any amount are appreciated to keep this research program growing, including clinical trial development, for this very deadly cancer affecting children and adults. THANK YOU!
Sarcomas are diagnosed in both adults and children, representing 1% of adult cancers and 15% of pediatric cancers. A 5-year survival rate of only about 50% results from the severely underfunded nature of this lesser-known cancer. In fact, there is only 1 first line treatment for the 50+ types of soft tissue sarcomas, approved by the FDA back in 1974!
The Paula Takacs Foundation raises funds needed for LCI and LCH research through private donations by individuals and corporations, as well as its annual Sarcoma Stomp Walk/Run. The Foundation currently supports an immunotherapy clinical trial; a pending dual-biologics (non-chemo) trial; a blood biopsy study and genomic studies in osteosarcoma and synovial sarcoma. Clinical trials gives patients, age 12 an up, a new treatment option. It also allows these patients to be treated closer to where they live rather than travel to far-away centers. The other studies hope to uncover some of the drivers of genetic mutations in sarcomas with the hopes of applying the knowledge gained to future clinical trials.

Each of these projects costs $100,000 - $800,000 to conduct, and therefore private philanthropy is key to our ability to fund current and future research projects. We hope you will join us in this important effort to help children and adults suffering from this rare and deadly cancer. Together we can bring hope and healing to these people in our community and beyond.
