What We Do

Promising Pages is a nonprofit organization that collects new and donated books and shares them with children living in the Charlotte Area Book Desert: those with few, if any, books at home. Our mission is to provide ownership of books to underserved children and cultivate a lifelong love of reading through innovative literacy programs and partnerships. Fueled by studies showing that children who can’t read proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school, Promising Pages provides direct classroom programming and more than 180,000 free books annually, making us Charlotte’s largest and most efficient distributor of upcycled books aimed at addressing this critical – and solvable – community need.

Promising Pages envisions a world where all children have adequate reading materials at home, can see themselves reflected in the books they read, and have made reading a joyful habit for a lifetime.

Interesting Info

More than 962,000 donated books have cycled though our Operations Center since January 2012.
We shared nearly 103,000 books between March 16 and July 31, 2020 to help students maintain their reading skills while schools were closed due to COVID-19.
25 By '25: We're working to provide a home library of 25 books to each household in the Charlotte-area book desert by 2025.
