Shelter Health Services
Shelter Health Services free clinic is the primary point of care for residents of the Salvation Army Center of Hope, the largest homeless shelter for women and children in our region. We provide the portal to essential medical services for homeless women and children. Our clients lack ACCESS to medical resources. Our unique service model makes healthcare available and easily accessible. Being located within the population we serve provides free direct access to providers, allowing prompt walk-in care, unlimited visits and free extended care for 6 months, abating the need for this population to use the ER for non-emergent needs, thus saving taxpayers thousands of dollars.
Our clients are uninsured, medically indigent, homeless women and children living in poverty. They lack access to equitable and compassionate health care. Our on-site free clinic provides ready access to a continuity of services that allows our clients to manage their medical health, prescription assistance to ensure residents get the medications they need to address their issues, and access to on-site mental health and dental services. Due to their transient nature, our clients have lacked healthcare and many health issues have been unaddressed due to unfortunate negative social determinants. Our clients seek care in the clinic when something is wrong and needs attention. For them preventive care is a luxury. Shelter Health goes beyond the immediate acute issue presented and searches for other issues percolating below the surface. The Titanic wasn’t sunk by what was seen on the surface but by the dangers that lurked unseen below the surface. Our team of volunteer providers and clinic staff validates existing issues, detects new issues below the surface, identifies signs of onset of major health issues, and educates on how to avoid and prevent issue occurrence.
