What We Do

UMBA Bright Stars-Beyond the School Day, provides excellent K-5 after school and summer camp programs that assist every child to become proficient readers and mathematics “Stars.” Every child is created by God with a special purpose and plan for their lives. Our purpose is to provide a caring, loving, safe, and nurturing integrated learning environment where children strive in excellence to become the unique “Stars” that they were created to be. During the daily, weekly program, children are enriched in their learning that encompasses the mind, body, and spirit through S.T.E.A.M, Leadership, and the teaching of Core values.

COVID-19 and Its Impact:

The birth of “Bright Stars Virtual Learning Center.” Due to COVID-19, Bright Stars will open in the Fall with a Virtual Learning Center (VLC). The site that housed our program will not be available due to COVID-19. However, our goal is to continue to provide education support to students who are in most need of support. Studies show that struggling learners and children from low-income families suffer the most when schools are closed. The VLC will provide: Academic Support in connection with CMS remote learning, Enrichment through S.T.E.A.M activities and Parent and Community Engagement. The children that we serve need every opportunity to expand their learning. COVID-19 has taken its toll on every aspect of life as we have known it pre COVID-19. Bright Stars would like to continue offering out-of-school time for students beginning in the Fall 2020. We will need volunteers to serve as tutors and local sponsors for the S.T.E.A.M component of the Virtual Learning Center. Registration will begin September 8, 2020.

Interesting Info

From 2017-2020, using donations from local community groups and individuals, we provided sliding scale scholarships to more than 60% of our students.
Partnering with local community churches, in the use of their facility, our goal is to provide out-of-school time locations in different areas of the community.
