What We Do

Wing Haven Garden & Bird Sanctuary has been a special part of Charlotte since its creation by Elizabeth and Edwin Clarkson in 1927. The gardens, enclosed on all sides by brick walls, encompass nearly three acres in the heart of Charlotte and include lovely vistas, formal gardens, and woodland areas.

Throughout, the emphasis is on plantings for birds and other wildlife—providing cover, nesting sites, food, and water. Plaques and statuary, integrated into the garden walls and paths, reflect the spirit and beauty of Wing Haven and its creators. Visitors marvel not only at the gardens but the frequent sightings of birds and the small wildlife scampering throughout the property.

In 2008, the Wing Haven Foundation acquired the Elizabeth Lawrence House & Garden, located just a few doors down from the Wing Haven Foundation office.

Elizabeth Lawrence (1904-1985) was already a recognized garden designer and writer when, in 1948, she moved from Raleigh to Charlotte, NC, and began building the house and making a garden just footsteps away from Wing Haven Gardens & Bird Sanctuary.

A graceful refuge that doubled as a living laboratory for her study and appreciation of plants and design, Lawrence’s nearly one-third acre garden in Charlotte was a frequent reference and inspiration for her writing for thirty-five years.

Today, the Foundation preserves the legacy of these amazing gardeners through the care and maintenance of both historic properties. And in 2019, we opened the new SEED (Student Environmental Education & Discovery) Wildlife & Children's Garden for additional outdoor learning opportunities. We offer educational programs and special events for adults, families and children year round. Wing Haven also provides educational outreach to at-risk preschool children through our PEEPs program. Financial support is provided through private contributions and fundraising events. Wing Haven is supported, in part, with funding from ASC.
