As each of our classes start their sophomore year of high school, they begin our Adelante program, designed to personalize the post secondary research and application process for them. As part of the Adelante experience, each girl is matched with a mentor who will guide her through her personal journey to post-secondary education. Our mentors are the foundation of each girl’s Adelante experience. The heart of the role is providing valuable support as our students navigate the college or post-secondary education and scholarship research and application process. Experiencing the joy of watching a young woman recognize the possibility before her while growing into her best self is the greatest gift of mentoring. These interesting, passionate, principled volunteers support their student as she navigates a process full of challenges and opportunities. Responsibilities Include: Serving as a thoughtful and compassionate mentor and guide to your student, actively cheering her on to greater success and encouraging her through difficult times while expanding her exposure to possibilities and protocols. Attending the Adelante group meetings. These events are carefully planned to help you and your student learn valuable information about the college process while allowing you to get to know one another better and make concrete plans. Sharing your contact information and communicate your availability to your student so that she can reach out to you as necessary but appropriately. Talking to your student at least once a month by phone about her plans and needs. Seeing your student at least once a month. Brainstorming and planning your student’s college and scholarship research and application process with support from the Adelante Facilitator. Guiding your student in the application process for college and scholarships as well as summer jobs, internships, and camps. Responding to any check-ins from the Adelante Facilitator as well as notifying her of any concerns or celebrations you have at any time during the program.
