Raise Your Hands, Charlotte!

Written by brigitte    on April 11, 2016

The walls of the Hands on Charlotte offices are filled with handprints of many of the volunteers that the organization has placed on different projects around Charlotte. For 25 years Hands on Charlotte, part of the international Hands On network, has worked to provide nearly 100,000 volunteers a way to assist the community in which they live.

This Saturday, April 16 is this year’s Hands on Charlotte Day, a daylong fundraising and service event held as part of National Volunteer Week which has recognized our country’s volunteers since 1974.

In support, SHARE Charlotte would like to recognize Hands on Charlotte as our Nonprofit of the Week and we had the opportunity to meet with Executive Director Eric Law — a Charlotte native — whose enthusiasm and passion for Hands on Charlotte was contagious.

Spring and (for some) Spring Break has officially begun. Thanks to Queen Charlotte the Groundhog it has been wonderfully warm for quite some time making this week the perfect time to get outdoors and enjoy all this season has to offer. While you’re at it, consider showing some love to these nonprofits who work to preserve our natural surroundings for everyone (human and wildlife alike) to enjoy.

Go Local for Read Across America Day!

Written by brigitte    on March 2, 2016

Here at SHARE Charlotte, we love to read! We also know how important books are - how they can ignite imaginations, foster empathy and change the world. Yet, there are so many children who either don’t read very well or know how to read at all.

Here in Charlotte, we can change this. In honor of Read Across America Day, we’ve compiled a list of local nonprofits dedicated to strengthening literacy in our communities.

It’s no surprise that technology has changed the way we work, play and even socialize. Yet, how it’s changed the way we teach and learn is beyond what we could have ever imagined a couple decades ago. Within the last five years, it seems that digital learning has become accepted more and more in classrooms all over the country.

It’s World Cancer Day, a global event that “unites the world’s population in the fight against cancer”. It’s a pretty serious problem stateside. In the United States, cancer is the second highest leading cause of death after heart disease. You may be thinking, “It’s certainly a global issue, but how can I help at home?”

Our founder Kelly Brooks recently headed over to Skookum for one of their popular tech talks. What was her topic? Giving back, of course!

Pressed for time? Here are a few highlights:

- What's Give Shop? In a nutshell, "you can change the world by sitting on the couch and clicking a few times."

- Kelly shares our believe that any level of giving is changing the world a little bit at a time. Philanthropy is very personal. It's based on our individual circumstances and belief systems. SHARE's goal is help everyone give back in the way that works best for them.

- Nonprofits need help 365 days a year, not just at the holidays. There's always a need and a way for you to help. Get started here
