VoteRiders
VoteRiders’ mission is to ensure that all eligible citizens are able to exercise their freedom to vote. We work with voters both in person and virtually to get their ID so they can cast a ballot that counts. We break through the barriers voters face - high cost to obtain documents, DMV appointments and free transportation via Uber. With North Carolina's voter ID law now in effect, we need your help more than ever!
VoteRiders provides free, personalized assistance to voters, including:
- Covering the cost of required documents (like birth certificates or social security cards) and ID
- Arranging and paying for transportation to the local ID-issuing office
- Answering questions about the voter’s state voter ID laws
- Providing pro bono legal assistance with certain document issues.
We partner with organizations to host Voter ID Clinics in person. Clinics are designed to assist multiple voters with their documents and IDs during a scheduled, recurring day and time. These events make it easy and convenient for voters to access one-on-one assistance from VoteRiders staff and trained volunteers.
VoteRiders also provides virtual support (by phone) to people who need ID. People can reach out to us directly, or be referred by a partner organization. VoteRiders website is a go-to resource for voters. It provides state-by-state information on voter ID laws and what ID is required if a person is voting in person or absentee. Wallet-sized cards with this information can be printed from our website.
We provide all the training and support you'll need to make a difference for NC voters - with their NC ID or driver's license, they'll not only be able to vote, but also have what they need to get on-boarded to a good-paying job, access healthcare, get housing, and much more. Join us in this important work!
NOTE: Because of the training required to do this work, it is not suitable for anyone is seeking to fulfill a time-limited community service or similar requirement.
- In 2022, VoteRiders assisted over 7 million voter with ID assistance and information
- As many as 11 percent of eligible voters do not have the kind of ID their state requires to vote, and is higher for minority, senior and low-income voters.
- In 2024, every North Carolinian needs an ID to vote as they'll be asked to show ID when they go to the polls or vote by mail.
