Meet Hospitality House, Providing Compassionate Accommodations To Patients in Charlotte
Our healthcare outcomes should not be determined by where we live and that is one of the key messages within Health Equity conversations. Every individual, regardless of their location, should have fair and equal access to the resources and care needed to live a healthy life.
In terms of proximity, access to quality healthcare is not an issue for people living in or near Charlotte. Our city is home to two major healthcare systems, world-class cancer institutes, and one of the leading pediatric hospitals in the Southeast.
However, in the wake of a disturbing trend of rural NC hospitals closing, many North Carolinians find themselves traveling to Charlotte to receive the critical medical care they need. And while some of this care involves in-patient stays, others do not. This forces some patients to commute long distances, or find temporary accommodations in hotels - adding stress and cost during vulnerable situations.
This is where Hospitality House of Charlotte, our presenting parter for this month's #SpotlightOnCLT for Health Equity, meets a growing need by providing an affordable and caring place to stay. Last year, Hospitality House of Charlotte served 2,380 guests for a collective 15,442 nights during their difficult medical journeys. By staying at HHOC, patients and caregivers offset $2.3 million in lodging costs alone.
SHARE Charlotte interviewed Hospitality House so you could learn more about their mission and how you can support their guests:
Please tell us why you are excited to sponsor January's #SpotlightOnCLT Health Equity through SHARE Charlotte.
We are thrilled to partner with SHARE Charlotte for January's #SpotlightOnCLT Health Equity because it aligns perfectly with our commitment to improving access to healthcare. By partnering with SHARE Charlotte, we can amplify the voices of nonprofits dedicated to health equity and help drive meaningful change in our community. We believe that everyone deserves access to the care they need, and this partnership is a step towards making that vision a reality.
What is the mission of Hospitality House?
Hospitality House of Charlotte's mission is to create community for patients connecting to vital medical care. Since 1985, HHOC advances equitable access to healthcare through private, low-cost accommodations in close proximity to Charlotte's world-class hospital systems.
Our 20-bedroom facility offers housing and holistic health programming to patients and caregivers, ensuring access to vital medical treatment that is unavailable where they live.
If there was ONE thing you wanted Charlotteans to know about Hospitality House, what would it be?
The expenses associated with a health crisis, including travel and lodging, can cause extreme financial and logistical burdens. So much so that it may deter patients from seeking care altogether. Hospitality House provides affordable lodging (rooms cost $50/night and aid is available) and more importantly a community of support, which ultimately reduce patient and family burdens and improve health outcomes.
How can Charlotteans learn more about you and help you serve your guests?
HHOC relies on the generosity of community members in order to serve patients and their families during medical crises.

Many of us can relate to the stress and fear of a diagnosis or hospital stay. We're so thankful that Hospitality House is available to help ease the burden of finding accommodations for many patients and their families.
