#52Tuesdays: Ohavia Phillips
If you do not know Ohavia Phillips, frankly, you are missing out.
Ohavia is a local media personality, and not only is she great at was she does, but she uses her talent for GOOD.
Ohavia is a perfect example of someone who knows that giving back is personal and looks different for everyone. While some people prefer hands-on volunteer opportunities such as helping to build houses and assemble sandwiches, others, such as Ohavia, choose to give back by using their personal skill set. The beauty of it? Both hands-on and skill based volunteer opportunities support our nonprofit community in a different, but equally important, way.
Last November, Ohavia donated much of her time, and her always entertaining and captivating personality, to SHARE Charlotte to help amplify the #GivingTuesdayCLT campaign. Ohavia hit the streets with a camera crew from Spiracle Media and started conversation with unsuspecting locals in all different corners of Charlotte to talk about what it means to be an #EverydayPhilanthropist.
Ohavia not only helped us take social media by storm with the #EverdayPhilanthropist series, but she has also given her time and talent to emcee two major SHARE Charlotte events: our big day-of Giving Tuesday Telethon for GOOD on November 27th in the Wells Fargo Atrium, and our GOODie Awards Ceremony on January 23rd at the Duke Mansion.
It is one thing for us to describe Ohavia’s heart for the nonprofit community and Charlotte at large, but it is much better if you hear it in her own words.
We got the chance to ask Ohavia a few questions about why she chooses to give GOOD.
You give back to the nonprofit community by donating your both your time and your talent, what inspires you to do that?
True impact is sharing your gifts with the world to make it a better place. If you’re not doing that then why are you here? Give to others, inspire, empower and be the difference.
Why is it so important that people show love to the city they live in?
This is where you live, eat, go to work and where you’ll grow. It’s important to show your city love because it exposes others to the awesome qualities your city has. We should all be brand ambassadors for our own cities and show people how proud we are to live there. After all, who else could?
What have you learned about the nonprofit community by volunteering your time?
I learned that I love my city even more and I love nonprofits; but especially that I love lending my time and talents to the nonprofit world. They give US so much, I’m just grateful I can give BACK.
