#AccessGrantedCLT: Making Healthcare Possible for Families in Need

$560,000.

That’s how much a liver transplant costs.

And if you’ve ever found yourself stuck in a hospital bed, you know all too well how quickly costs add up.

It seems like so much as asking your nurse for a Snickers bar these days will set you back a thousand bucks. And sadly, that’s not much of an exaggeration.

Healthcare costs have quadrupled over the last 50 years, and 62% of bankruptcies in the U.S. are filed as a result of an unexpected medical expense. Even with insurance, it is more expensive to get medical care today than at any point in our history. This, as you can imagine, is a problem.

So what can you do? How can you help? How do we, together, fix this mess?

How a local nonprofit helps families cope

In Charlotte, we’re lucky to have All Things Possible Medical Fundraising. A nonprofit dedicated to helping families pay for unexpected medical bills, so they can get back on their feet after a serious setback to their health.

If you haven’t heard of Lisa Sexton yet, you will.

All Things Possible’s incredibly passionate founder has worked relentlessly to spread the word about her organization since 2013 after her own extended stay in the hospital.

She learned first hand how overwhelming healthcare costs can be, saying that even with good insurance, “20% of a lot, is still a lot.”

“When medical debt is such that you have exhausted all your savings and are wondering which to pay, the electric bill or the doctor, your priorities can be altered dramatically,” she says.

Her organization pays medical providers directly after an extensive patient vetting process, so donors can be sure their donations will be used exactly where they’re needed most.

Unlike most nonprofits who keep a veil between donors and recipients, All Things Possible actually encourages donors to meet the families they’re helping face to face. Their number one goal is to help communities come together to support each other during rough times.

All Things Possible needs your help

By relying on an amazing network of dedicated volunteers, All Things Possible is able to organize two major events each year including a popular golf tournament to help raise money.

But with the never-ending rise of healthcare costs, these events only cover a fraction of expenses. In order to continue to help Charlotte families pay for medical emergencies, All Things Possible needs your help.

By spreading the word about their mission to give, you’re giving hope to families who are otherwise faced with a desperate situation. And while you may not be able to do anything about that $1,000 Snickers bar, with your help, and Lisa’s determination, dozens of families in Charlotte can make it through the toughest time of their lives just a little bit easier.
