#GivingTuesdayCLT 2020 Press Release
Charlotte Kicks Off the Giving Season with #GivingTuesdayCLT
Global day of generosity encourages Mecklenburg County to give back on Dec. 1
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 30 , 2020
(CHARLOTTE, N.C.) - December 1st marks Charlotte’s seventh year celebrating the global generosity movement GivingTuesday locally with #GivingTuesdayCLT, presented by Wells Fargo and powered by SHARE Charlotte.
Celebrated annually the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the years, it has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.
#GivingTuesdayCLT encourages the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community to come together to support local nonprofits. Since 2014, #GivingTuesdayCLT has influenced over $28M in gifts to local nonprofits and inspired more than 25,000 new donors. In 2016, #GivingTuesdayCLT was named the largest GivingTuesday community celebration in the world. This year’s partners include Presenting Partner Wells Fargo and Official Partners Lowe’s and Google Fiber, as well as 60+ community partners helping encourage generosity throughout our community.
“Regardless of your circumstances, 2020 has been a tough year for everyone and forced us all to pause,” said Kendall Alley, Region Bank president for Charlotte. “We are proud to continue our support for #GivingTuesdayCLT, which provides a great opportunity to come together to take action for our community. It is our honor to serve our customers, support our employees and help accelerate the critical work of nonprofit organizations. Generosity looks different for each of us this year, and #GivingTuesdayCLT is our call to action to be generous and to share because Charlotte needs us.”
Lowe’s is offering an extra incentive to inspire financial donations for the third year in a row. The first 300 donors who give $50 or more to their favorite nonprofit on December1st* will have their donation generously matched by Lowe’s in the form of one $50 electronic gift card that is given to the nonprofit. *NOTE: To qualify for the match, donations must be made by clicking a participating nonprofits’ “donate” button and following the prompts to make a donation through PayPal.
“COVID-19 continues to make fundraising and engaging volunteers very challenging, and the pandemic’s impact on our economy has resulted in a higher demand for nonprofit services related to housing, food, mental health, foster care, access to technology, education, domestic violence and more.” says Amy Jacobs, Executive Director of SHARE Charlotte. “Our community coming together and being generous to Charlotte nonprofits on #GivingTuesdayCLT, and throughout the giving season, is arguably more important than ever before.”
