Let's Talk About It: #SpotlightOnCLT Autism Awareness
Today's highlight for #SpotlightOnCLT Autism Awareness is all about Let's Talk About it, The Autism Center. We spoke with Executive Director, La Becky Roe, about how this program makes such a big impact here in Charlotte. This program was established to help people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their caregivers to maximize their opportunities and life experiences. They offer IEP support, advocacy, behavioral interventions, sensory management support, and corporate training to promote the inclusion of people with ASD in their organizations. They facilitate workshops and support groups as they strive to build a sense of community among caregivers and their loved ones with ASD.
What would you like the community to know about the challenges your organization is trying to solve?
We want to inform the community about the challenges and abilities of people with autism. We want to facilitate the integration of people with autism into the community helping them to get viable employment, volunteer opportunities, and socialization opportunities.
What is your organization's role in the community?
We are "keeping autism on the table and in the conversation."
We love impact stories, could you share one?
Our organization was able to help a homeless mother and her adult son address some behaviors he was exhibiting. We also helped secure a housing voucher to get them into a hotel to disrupt their homelessness. We advocated for the family by contacting our local City Council person for assistance with housing.
About the image pictured above: The picture submitted shows us on-site at an autism awareness event. We were working directly with children with autism. Our table displayed a number of autism sensory toys, gadgets, and snacks.
