#SpotlightOnCLT: InnerVision

Our #SpotlightOnCLT Mental Health Month story focuses today on InnerVision.  We spoke with Director Dr. Cheryl Nicholas to learn more about how InnerVision is making an impact on mental well being in Charlotte.   What would you like for the community to know about the challenges your organization is trying to solve?   The unemployment rate is ~ 80% for individuals with severe and persistent mental health challenges. The death rate  for  individuals with severe and persistent mental health challenges is almost ~25% higher than the general population. There is stigma, misunderstanding and lack of knowledge about resources, services, supports and effective mental health interventions available in our community. Individuals with mental illnesses, including persons with severe and persistent challenges, can and do recover.     Could you describe for our community how InnerVision supports mental well being?   Located in the heart of Uptown Charlotte, across the street from the Main Transit Center; InnerVision is a nationally accredited nonprofit organization that provides innovative, recovery oriented employment, education and skills training interventions for low to no income adults with severe trauma, mental health and addiction challenges. Virtual and telehealth services are also available.   Could you share an impactful story with us about InnerVision?   Testimony from Darrell P (individual served) “My initial diagnosis was made at the age of 28 (I’m 40) after I suffered through two traumatic situations that halted my life. I wanted to work and looked for a job every day for 10 years but never seemed to find one that valued me. Today, I am at InnerVision. Finally I have a healing place where I can learn job skills and be with others who relate to my need  to work and value my experiences. It has been a long road and I am still on it but now I am working part time in construction and part time as a Certified Peer Support Specialist and getting paid to help others like me".   Learn More:
