#SpotlightOnCLT: Lakewood Preschool
All I really need to know I learned in kindergarten.
Author Robert Fulghum said that.
“Hold hands. Stick together. Flush.”
Crucial advice for five-year-olds.
(And the rest of us, too.)
But before the wonders of kindergarten comes the magic of preschool.
And a reminder that, even now, the best “time” in the world is still naptime and snacktime.
Preschool helps children develop vital social skills that stay with them well into their childhood.
But for many Charlotte families, the choice between paying rent and paying for preschool is really no choice at all.
Unless, of course, they’re lucky enough to find Lakewood Preschool and its Executive Director Anthony Howell.
Lakewood is a tuition-free preschool, which enrolls up to 48 two, three, and four-year-olds from low income families of Lakewood and its surrounding areas.
Howell is proud to offer these families a, “free part day program that provides high quality educational services to a community that is stricken with poverty, low educational attainment, and high under/unemployment rates in one of Charlotte’s oldest communities.”
As a Charlotte native himself, Howell has seen first hand the struggle these families face.
Do they give their children the best possible chance at a quality education?
Or do they put food on the table tonight?
Thankfully Lakewood’s hands-on, no-cost approach ensures they don’t have to make that choice.
Preschool is simple, yes, but it’s also an integral part to a child’s education.
It starts them off on the right track and, with your help, Lakewood will continue to set Charlotte’s youngest citizens on the path to educational success for many years to come.
