#SpotlightOnCLT: Addiction and Recovery

SHARE Charlotte’s #SpotlightOnCLT: Addiction and Recovery

This May, we are leading a content series conversation around Addiction and Recovery for our #SpotlightOnCLT. We will focus our spotlight on nonprofits whose core work supports individuals struggling with Substance Use Disorders (SUD) or addiction and who offer programs for transition and recovery.

#SpotlightOnCLT is SHARE Charlotte’s monthly content series that highlights a different cause or issue each month (often referred to as the "theme" of the month). This series allows us to explore the crucial work being done in that particular area, educate the community, and explore the given topic through the lens of the nonprofit community- breaking down who does what, how to get involved, and connecting resources.

This month, we are giving thanks to Hope Haven who not only provide resources to our community for those struggling with addiction, but who are helping us shine a light on this important topic all month long. Follow along with us in our newsletters and on social media to learn more about Hope Haven and more about the nonprofits supporting this cause, today and every day.

In today's #SpotlightOnCLT story, we’re sharing with you a guide to nonprofits who share their love, guidance, and support with individuals and families dealing with substance abuse disorders and the long (but hopeful) road to recovery.

🎧 Be sure to listen to Do Good CLT Podcast later this month for in depth interviews with Hope Haven and the Dilworth Center. Our friends at Queen City Podcast Network help us lift the voices of nonprofits every month for #SpotlightOnCLT.

📺 We’ll also be sharing the incredible people behind some of these nonprofits through our media partners. Keep an eye on QC Mornings (Fridays), Queen City News and On Your Side Tonight with Jamie Boll to see addiction and recovery nonprofit stories.

💙 Stay tuned for our next #SpotlightOnCLT story, coming up next week, as we learn more about Hope Haven, how they’re helping Charlotteans, and their plans for a bright future.

We hope you read and share this guide to Addiction and Recovery nonprofits to anyone in need:

Hope Haven, Inc.

Hope Haven is a Therapeutic Community that provides a foundation of recovery for individuals and families impacted by substance use disorder so they can build healthy independent lives. We provide long-term, residential recovery treatment combined with independent living skills and case management for some of the most vulnerable members of our community.

A story of hope: “One of the dads in our families program recently shared, “When people give to Hope Haven, they are investing in a family – a big family made up of a bunch of little families.”

You can make an impact: Hope Haven is working hard to rebuild their volunteer program following the devastating impacts of COVID, and would love to host individuals or groups of volunteers. They can create a custom volunteer experience based on the individual or group's needs and interests.

Emerald School of Excellence

The Emerald School works with High School age teens to support them in their recovery process. The School is designed to support teenagers with substance abuse disorder and co-occurring disorders to ensure they receive a quality education in a recovery support environment.

A student story: “Most students at the Emerald School come to the school behind in their High School studies. Some have the mind set that they will never graduate. One of the students had the mind set, but after his years at the Emerald School, not only did he graduate he is now at a 4 year college working on a aerospace engineer degree. Not to mention this student is now in his 3rd year of recovery.”

You can help by joining their GEM club. This club is where members of the community can give every month to support teens in recovery. This will allow many people in Charlotte to give a small amount, but make a huge impact.

Dilworth Center

The mission of Dilworth Center is to provide effective and affordable treatment services for individuals and families affected by alcoholism and drug addiction. We offer a holistic approach to recovery, addressing not only addiction but also the underlying mental health factors that contribute to this disease to ensure individuals and their family members have the necessary skills to be successful in recovery.

Hope and recovery: “My recovery means everything to me and would not have been possible if not for the time at Dilworth and my parents support through the Dilworth family program. The Program literally saved my life! My parent’s learning, through the Dilworth program, and understanding of the disease and how to communicate and interact with me was monumentally important to my sobriety. My relationship with my parents prior to Dilworth was non-existent and now I actually like them. Thank you all for your support of my two plus years of sobriety!

Support the Dilworth Center: The disease of addiction destroys jobs, relationships, families and communities. It impacts us all in some way. Your support is essential to keeping our organization- and our patients- on the path to success.Your help provides comprehensive recovery services to those who find themselves at our doors. McLeod Centers for Wellbeing

The mission of McLeod Centers for Wellbeing is to support those experiencing substance use disorders by building a foundation of healing and hope based on equity, education, and evidence-based practice for everyone, regardless of status or ability to pay. At McLeod Centers, we seek to provide services using a dignified, equitable, and accessible approach that allows us to reach all members of our community including those who may experience barriers to seeking treatment in other settings.

A true testament: “An absolutely amazing experience at McLeod Center! This place has turned my life around! It has made me a better person to everyone and also to myself! With the medication and amazing counseling, I have stayed sober and I feel I am making a difference in the community! Thank you for everything you have done for not only me but for my family as well!”

McLeod seeks support via item or money donations to support our 28-day residential patients such as toiletries, socks, underwear, AA and NA Books, Art Supplies and exercise equipment.

Charlotte Rescue Mission

At Charlotte Rescue Mission, our nonprofit operates by providing cost-free, faith-based residential recovery programs. We offer a comprehensive approach that assists individuals struggling with addiction in achieving long-term sobriety, gaining financial stability and secure housing, and fostering healthy relationships. Through our programs, we offer a supportive environment where individuals can heal spiritually, emotionally, and physically, empowering them to rebuild their lives and thrive in recovery.

Chris’s Story: The initial week at the Mission was nothing short of overwhelming for Chris. Surrounded by people that were genuinely dedicated to helping him, he faced not only the challenge of overcoming addiction but also the fear of letting others into his fractured world. "I was scared of people, scared of letting them in," Chris admits. "But Charlotte Rescue Mission taught me to love myself before I even knew how."

How can you give back? Charlotte Rescue Mission’s biggest need right now is monetary donations for their program expenses.

Anuvia Prevention and Recovery Center

Anuvia has provided substance use disorder (SUD) and mental health treatment and prevention services to Mecklenburg County for 65 years. With overdoses, alcohol-related deaths, adolescent mental health crises, and suicide on the rise, these services have never been more vital to the health of our community.

My Anuvia experience: “When I first came to Anuvia I had no guidance and nothing to look forward to, and I was hanging with the wrong crowd, per se, and I was still not knowing what would come next. Coming here in the beginning was hard because of my mindset, because of my mindset I looked at things differently than I should have. One day I had a talk with my therapist and he told me “you don’t need to be here forever so what is it that you want”, I simply told him I needed to get out of here as soon as possible, not knowing what he actually meant or asked me. After a long talk I realized it’s not what I needed, it’s what I wanted”

Offering support: Anuvia's most pressing need is financial donations to enable them to continue to provide services regardless of any individual's ability to pay. Another way to support is to sponsor their 65th Anniversary event - "Healing Lives for 65!" (September 27 @ 6 pm) or to purchase a table or tickets to the event.
