Hurricane Florence: How YOU Can Help
Listed below are some of our local nonprofit partners who are responding to Hurricane Florence by providing resources and services to those in harm's way. While these nonprofits are already helping those affected, they are still in need of YOUR help to continue doing this important work:
United Way of Central Carolinas:It’s easy to donate to United Way's Hurricane Florence Recovery Fund to support local communities in NC, SC, Ga. and surrounding areas affected. To donate, text FLORENCE to 40403 or visit this link.
Charlotte Community Toolbank:
Our friends at Charlotte Community Toolbank have started a donation drive to help in their Disaster Response. Financial donations may be made here. Additionally, other charitable groups in need of tools may apply for a free membership with the ToolBank here.
Salvation Army:
As Hurricane Florence threatens the east coast of the United States, The Salvation Army is ready to serve those in need and, with your support, they can stay on the frontlines of any crisis. For the latest updates on their disaster relief efforts, visit www.disaster.salvationarmyusa.org.
Loaves and Fishes:
Loaves & Fishes provides nutritionally balanced groceries to individuals and families experiencing short-term crisis through a network of 30+ emergency food pantries located throughout Mecklenburg County. They are in need of donations more than ever as Hurricane Florence brings of families in need to Loaves and Fishes pantries. Donate here.
American Red Cross:
American Red Cross is in need of volunteers from the Greater Carolina Region to help support Hurricane Florence relief efforts. They need help maintaining and setting up sheltering facilities, registering clients, maintaining client information, serving meals, and general housekeeping. If you live within the Greater Carolinas Region and are willing to volunteer for a 6-12 hour shift, please here. In addition, you can also make a financial donation here.
Restore Global:
Restore Global is serving as the national staging and distribution point for most of the large corporate and foundation gift-in-kind donations focusing on pet care assets and pet food. They will be working with local agencies (such as the Humane Society of Charlotte) if individuals would like to make a donation of pet food or supplies. They will be serving all of both NC and SC. Humane Society of Charlotte:
As of Friday afternoon, the Humane Society of Charlotte had already seen 150 Charlotteans step up to the plate to foster animals during the hurricane, but they are still in need of more foster homes as their shelter continues to fill up with animals from evacuated areas. If you are someone you know would be willing to foster an animal in need, please email dhans@humanecharlotte.org or ifoster@humanecharlotte.org. Additionally, if you would like to make a financial donation to ensure every animal in the shelter is properly fed and taken care of, click here.
American Heart Association of Charlotte:
American Heart Association of Charlotte has provided a Disaster Resources page which includes a wide range of helpful information in addition to quick tips. You can help by spreading the word and sharing the information on their resources page.
The Relatives:
Many of the teens and young adults that The Relatives serve at their Resource Center do not have a place to go during the storm and may find themselves in one of the emergency shelters in Charlotte. They are asking for the following donations to keep the people they serve safer during this time: snack food, bottled water, ponchos and rain coats, umbrellas, flashlights, blankets, pillows and sleeping bags. Friendship Trays:
Friendship Trays requires 120 volunteers each weekday to keep all 102 meal delivery routes up and running and they are in need of volunteers to help as they respond to Hurricane Florence. Sign up to help here.
Heal Charlotte:
Due to the large amount of evacuees fleeing to Charlotte that will be lacking in food, supplies and shelter, HEAL Charlotte is collecting supplies and raising money to put families in extended stays. If you have items such as hygiene supplies, Ziploc bags, mosquito repellant, or other necessities, please consider shipping/dropping off these items to 420 East 15th Street, Charlotte, NC 28206. Charlotte Rescue Mission:
Charlotte Rescue Mission is partnering with Salvation Army and The Men's Shelter by opening the doors of their chapel to provide overflow shelter for homeless men, women, and children. They are in need of emergency supplies at this time. Please consider dropping necessities for families in need (such as use bottled water, flashlights and batteries, sanitizing hand wipes, pillows, and blankets) at 907 West 1st Street.
Men's Shelter of Charlotte:
Men's Shelter of Charlotte remains in overflow status as they are currently hosting an extra 100 men. They are in need of non-perishable food and other supplies for the shelter to keep everyone staying at their facility fed, warm, and dry. Items needed include: new towels, shower shoes, pillows, underwear and undershirts. These items can be dropped off at 1210 North Tryon Street. Financial donations are welcomed to off-set added supply and staffing costs, you can donate securely via their donation page.
Urban Ministry Center:
Urban Ministry Center in Charlotte is also financial as well as in-kind donations to help keep their shelters running for the overflow of people they are serving in wake of Hurricane Florence. If you would like to donate items such as flashlights, batteries, ponchos, tarps and tents that can be passed along to people enrolled in the nonprofit's housing for homeless program, please drop these necessities off at 945 North College St. To offer a financial donation, click here.
Foundation For The Carolinas:
FFTC has launched a Hurricane Florence Response Fund to support those affected by the storm. Donations to the Hurricane Florence Response Fund will be directed to nonprofits in North and South Carolina providing relief to victims of the storm. To donate, click here. Additionally, If your corporation would like information about supporting employees during times of disaster and hardship, please visit E4E Relief, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Foundation For The Carolinas.
