#SpotlightOnCLT: Passport and Project Scientist Connect for STEM Education in Charlotte
Passport and Project Scientist Connect for STEM Education in Charlotte
Charlotte-based mobility management company Passport hosted its first-ever "Connect for Charity" Connect Four tournament Sunday, April 7 at Triple C Brewing Company. The fundraiser netted $45,000 for SHARE Charlotte partner Project Scientist, a nonprofit committed to exposing a diverse population of young girls to a high-quality STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) academy.
Charlotte's startup and business communities were well represented among the 30 teams competing on oversized Connect Four boards, with groups from Bradley, PwC and fellow tech startups MapAnything and Stratifyd. Event sponsors included Tricon American Homes, JLL, Metrographics and Womble Bond Dickinson. A PwC team won first prize: Wells Fargo championship tickets, trophies and bragging rights of the inaugural event.
"I am so proud of the work that Passport and Project Scientist team members accomplished together to make this event a success," said Kate Haffey, Passport vice president of people operations. "Passport is proud to support Project Scientist as they build the next generation of STEM professionals."
"Whether hosting on-site visits from our students, serving as role models for women in technology, or hosting fundraisers, Passport exemplifies the many ways STEM companies can support our mission," said Sandy Marshall, Project Scientist founder and CEO.
Project Scientist hosts summer STEM academies for girls on university campuses in Charlotte and California. The program will expand to Minnesota in July 2019.
