🫢🏽 Volunteer for the gala and ACS!

Let's learn more about the American Cancer Society. We got the chance to chat with Joyce Caron-Mercier, American Cancer Society's Senior Development Director here in Charlotte.  We learned some fun and surprising facts about ACS, how you can get involved, and how you can lead the charge in supporting cancer research and support.

What would you like Charlotteans to know about ACS?

"Our 113-year-old brand is widely known and regarded; however, many people do not know what we do!  We are the leading cancer-fighting organization with a vision to end cancer as we know it, for everyone. We are the only organization improving the lives of people with cancer and their families through advocacy, research and patient support, to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer.

We serve cancer survivors, caregivers, donors, health care providers, researchers, people without cancer, policymakers, volunteers (we have more than 1M).

Our services have touched 4,157 unique recipients in North Carolina, totaling 38,423 services including lodging, transportation to treatments,  24/7 help line, and more. In Mecklenburg, that is 580 patients and 4,000 services.

Since 1946, ACS has supported researchers at pivotal points in their career. We are proud to have helped more than 24,000 investigators make important advances in prevention, early detection, treatment and care for those with cancer.

We are currently funding 25 grants in North Carolina totaling more than $11.3 Million {Atrium Health, Duke University, East Carolina University, Wake Forest University Health Sciences and University of NC, Chapel Hill}."

What impact does volunteering have for the American Cancer Society?

"We are a volunteer-centric organization.

From galas with delicious food tastings to our GenNow Network (young professional) socials and Relay for Life and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks, community members join one another for a common cause. Many feature live entertainment, silent/live auctions, and games that create an unforgettable event for everyone in attendance.

We are striving to make greater impact in our community by engaging corporate, philanthropic, and business leaders from all industries to join our boards (monthly planning meetings & sponsor acquisition), leading fundraising efforts connected to events such as golf tournaments and walks, while amplifying our impact through respective networks and social media.

Our impact nationally, 3.5 Million fewer cancer deaths, access to care for all, prevention and screening, and direct patient support such as Road to Recovery with volunteer Deb Hanson. (Watch the video to see what it's like to Do GOOD with ACS, featuring Jason Harper)"

How can Charlotteans help you, now?

"Our events desire volunteers, attendees, sponsors and donors. We have something for everyone, since we are the only nonprofit supporting people with all types of cancer through advocacy, research and patient support."
